THE ART OF DISSAPPEARANCE by Alice Stepanek

In our times of threatening climate change, painter Alice Stepanek turns her attention to the subtle components of our natural world that receive little attention, such as seeds and dust, and to the endangered creatures, especially insects.

For Alice Stepanek the very fine structure of small organisms is an aesthetic challenge, which ties into her general interest in the structural characteristics of our biological life. Her microscopic view of the world of insects, plants and phytoplankton is combined with decorative motifs, figures and rudimental traces of civilisation, as well as the fluidity of the paint. This motif-based compost heap is the result of a painting process in which intuition, pictorial ideas and chance interact.

For the installation THE ART OF DISAPPEARANCE, these poetic works on paper are staged as a forest of rustling leaves.
